Mrs. Ethel Cowart Harper
Mrs. Ethel Cowart Harper, 95, of Epworth, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, in Cumming, after a brief illness.
She was born in Copperhill, Tenn., to the late Glynn Tatum and Myrtle Barnes Cowart. She graduated from Epworth High School in 1940. During her senior year she married the late Alvin Bernard Harper, the love of her life. She was a full-time homemaker, and stay-at-home mom for 27 years.
In 1966 she took a job as a teaching assistant at Epworth Elementary School, a job she loved and enjoyed for many years. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her husband to whom she was married for 72 years.
She was actively involved in her church, First Baptist Church of Epworth, for over 60 years. Ethel had a servant’s heart and served the church in numerous capacities.
She is preceded in death by twin sister, Ellen Cowart Nicholson; sister Mary Cowart; and brothers, J.D. Cowart, Glynn Cowart, John Cowart and Robert Cowart.
She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Martha Harper, of Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Virginia Harper, of Seaside, Calif.; son, Rick Harper, of Reading, Pa.; brother, Wade Cowart, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; grandchildren and spouses, Jeff and Karen Harper, of Gautier, Miss.; Amy and Michael von Borstel, of Woodstock, Sabrina and Brad Bass, of Braselton, Christina Harper, of Alameda, Calif.; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, at the First Baptist Church of Epworth with Dr. Tom Jordan officiating.
Music was by Doug Simonds.
Interment followed in the First Baptist Church of Epworth Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steve Cheatham, Jimmie Foster, Eddy Garrison and Earle Jenkins.
