John Luke Whitaker
Mr. John Luke Whitaker, 82, of Ellijay, died Saturday, July 16, 2016.
He was born April 29, 1934, in Gilmer County to the late Theodore and Jessie Pless Whitaker. He was of the Baptist faith, the superintendent of the First Baptist Missionary Building and a U.S. Air Force veteran.
He is preceded in death by wife, Glenda Starks Whitaker; sisters, Jesse Mae Payne, Jean Weeks, Dessie Worley, Florence Chapman, Betty Carroll; brothers, Frank Whitaker and Sammy Whitaker.
He is survived by son and daughter in-law, Bobby and Lorene Whitaker, of Ellijay; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Pete Patterson, of Ellijay; sisters, Irene Rogers, of Jonesboro, Becky Cowart, Sue Long, both of Chatsworth, and Wanda Patterson, of Blue Ridge; two grandchildren, Stephen Patterson and Angie Jordon; two great-grandchildren, Brittany Jordon and Brett Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2016, from Mountaintown Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Emuel Sanford officiating.
Military rites were by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.
Music was by Ronald Hyde.
Pallbearers were James Long, Gary Cowart, Keith Parks, David Whitaker, Keith Hamby, Michael Whitaker, Austin Shed, David Chapman, Pat Thurman and Brett Smith.
Bernhardt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
