Mr. John Henry Stephens, 79, of Ellijay, died at his residence Friday, Dec. 20, 2019.

He was born Nov. 27, 1940, in Atlanta, to the late Guice Henry Stephens and Mary Elizabeth Kennedy. He was a member of the Ellijay Church of Christ and worked in the grocery business his entire life. 

He met and married the love of his life, Tommie Ellen Howland Stephens. They were married for 60 years. They resided in Ellijay for the past 31 years.

He never met a stranger and his hobby was spending time with his entire family whom he loved very much. 

He is preceded in death by grandchildren, Jeremy Carswell, Kennedy Cochran and Logan Mulkey.

He is survived by wife, Tommie Stephens; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa Carswell, Kelly and Jackie Cochran, Kim and Eddy Mulkey, all of Ellijay; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Emily Stephens, of Canton; brother, Charles (Cookie) Stephens, of Alabama; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2019, from Ellijay Church of Christ with Minister Butch Jones officiating. 

Music was by the congregation. 

Pallbearers were grandsons Joshua Carswell, Seth Carswell Reid Cochran, Russell Cochran, Ross Cochran, Rylan Cochran, Sawyer Thompson and Lewis Mulkey. 

Interment was in the Yukon Cemetery.

Donations can be made to Compasses Hospice in memory of Mr. Stephens.

Bernhardt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
