John H. Vernet

He was the son of the late John H. Vernet II and Louise Meigs Hitchcock. He was born May 27, 1917, in Menominee, Mich., and raised primarily in Racine, Wis. and Chicago, Ill. He served in the World War II, Air Force (389th Sig. Co.) Pacific Theater on Guam. In 1949, he moved to Lexington, Ky., met and married the love of his life, Gladys Powell McLendon, who gave him a loving family of three children.
John and Gladys moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1955 where he enjoyed his long career in hospital administration as director of purchasing, serving as president of the National Association of Hospital Purchasing and Materials Managers, 1978-1980.
He was known for his kind interest in others, his sense of integrity and his always courteous manner. His grandchildren often said that he was “the very epitome of a gentleman.” The west was his very favorite place to live, and he was an avid sportsman, photographer and woodworker. He was gratified to have several photos published in The Arizonian and many friends have enjoyed his woodworking gifts. A dedicated member of the United Methodist Church, he honored that faith by his lifelong participation in serving the church needs.
He was constantly working in charitable activities to improve every community in which he lived. Upon retirement, he returned East to be near children and resided in Centerville, Fla., and Ellijay. His last 10 years were at The Wesley Woods Towers in Decatur.
