James P. Sumner

Mr. James P. Sumner, 84 of Gate City, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at Holston Valley Medical Center with family and friends by his side, following a brief illness.

He was retired from AFG Industries (maintenance department) after 28 years of service and was a Navy Veteran and Mason. was saved at an early age and was a member of Glen Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by parents, Phillip and Reba Anderson Sumner; and brother, Harold Sumner.

He is survived by wife of 60 years, Mary Ruth Baker Sumner; brothers, Lloyd Sumner, of Ellijay, and W.C. Sumner, of Kingsport; sister, Willena Pruitt, of Cahutta; and several nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly; he also leaves his church family and many children of all ages, which he loved to spoil.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Oak Glen Baptist Church, Gate City, Va., with Pastor Danny Sykes officiating.

Music was by the Oak Glen Singers.

An entombment service was held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Oak Hill Memorial Park (mausoleum #1).

Pallbearers were Arvil James, Carlton James, Phillip Sumner, Ty Phillips, Tim Salyers, Anthony Odle, Buddy Anderson and Trevor Johnson.

Memorial contributions can be made to Oak Glen Baptist Church Building Fund, 2836 Yuma Road, Gate City, VA 24251.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Holston Valley Medical Center and NHC for the care and kindness shown to Jim during his illness.
