Gene Mathis

Mr. Gene Mathis, 82, of Gordon County, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016. He had resided at Wildwood Health Care in Jasper for the past several years. He was born in Gilmer County Oct. 16, 1933. He attended Ranger School and served in the Air Force from April 1, 1953 until discharge March 28, 1957. He spent most of his life in Ranger and surrounding areas, and was loved by all who came in contact with him for his sweet presence. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved watching the Atlanta Braves. He is preceded in death by wife of 50 years, Edna Maxine Mullinax Mathis; father, Lane Mathis; mother, Annie Lee Mulkey Mathis; brother, Clyde Mathis; brothers-in-law, Cleburn Mullinax, Eugene Mullinax and Wallace Mullinax; and sister-in-law, Sue Mullinax. He is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, RL and Betty Mathis, of Fairmount, and Terry and Linda Mathis, of Adairsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra and Gary Mosley, of Jasper, and Linda and Dave Foster, of Calhoun; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rebecca (Becky) Mathis, of Nelson, Lorea Thompson, of Travelers Rest, S.C., Joyce Ridley, of Dawsonville, Shirley DeFoor and husband Randy, of Calhoun, James Mullinax, of Marietta, and Hazel Mullinax, of Jasper; and many nieces and nephews and greatnieces and nephews. Services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 21, from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Brannon officiating. Interment followed in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, in Ellijay. Pallbearers were Kelly Mathis, Lee Mathis, Tony Mulkey, Donny Mulkey, Danny Mulkey and Brandon Mathis. The family wishes to thank the Wildwood Health Care staff for their exceptional care of Gene during his stay. Condolences can be made at www.maxbrannonandsons.com. Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home of Calhoun was in charge of arrangements.
