Eleanor Fay Woody

Eleanor Fay Woody, the love of Ernest Everett Woody’s life and a fierce supporter and protector of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, died Jan. 10, 2018, in Wilsonville, Ore. She was 77.

Eleanor was a small woman, yet huge of heart and devotion, and after 61 years of marriage, she and Ernie still gazed at each other like love-struck teenagers. “I always thought of them as a pretzel, so comfortably entwined,’’ a family friend noted. “A real love story.’’

Eleanor was a longtime dispatcher for the Anchorage Police Department in Alaska, where she was known to all as “Woody’’ and forged a reputation for composure, compassion, a tireless work ethic and leadership.

As a former co-worker wrote, “She had such a commanding presence for such a tiny stature.’’ In retirement, she remained in constant contact with many of her former co-workers and cherished their visits to Wilsonville and, earlier, Lincoln City, Ore., where she and her Ernie personally built their first retirement home.

Eleanor was a private, humble person, which is why many of her friends likely did not know she was a champion drag racer as a young mother in Germany, and owned the trophy that proved her mettle behind the wheel of a ‘57 Chevy. Eleanor crafted a mean quilt, was doggedly loyal to her family and friends, and, frankly, did not suffer fools, or impertinent cops — the latter were made to deliver bagels to her and her colleagues in the dispatch department. Most importantly, she proved a remarkable mother and wife, raising three kids while the Air Force sent Ernie on long tours of Vietnam, Korea, Germany and other distant points.

Eleanor was born to Elda Warren and Nita Longfellow Warren June 6, 1940, in Hartley, Del.

She is survived by her beloved Ernie; three children, Ronald Woody, Ernestine Victory (husband Thomas) and Doyle Woody (wife Sarah Henning); four grandchildren, Tisha Victory, Travis Victory (wife Melissa), Ernest J. Woody (wife Lisa) and Carmen Fay Gallup; four great-grandchildren, Hannah Gallup, Joshua Victory, Chanstin Victory and Hana Victory; and daughter-in-law, Perla Yvonne Woody.
