Mrs. Doris Jean Kenney, 83, died peacefully on the morning of Sept. 10, 2022, in Ellijay.

She was born Aug. 4, 1939, in the beautiful north Georgia mountains to Joel and Jewell Connor, of Ellijay. At a young age, she enrolled at Berry College and went to high school in Rome, where she worked, lived and earned her high school diploma.

During the latter part of her high school days, she met and married her high school sweetheart, Herman Kenney, and had her first child by the time she was 17 years old. From that point forward, she had two more children and started the life of a career military wife, who traveled overseas with her three small children to be with and support her husband.

After living overseas for three years, Jean moved back home to the states where she continued being a mother of three and a homemaker for her military husband.

She, along with her husband, eventually retired in Ellijay where she became a member of First Baptist Church. During her retirement years, she enjoyed traveling, reading, crafting and spending time with friends and family.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Herman E. Kenney.

She is survived by daughters, Crystal Kenney and Frances Kenney Moore; son, Stuart (Pat) Kenney; and grandson, Sam Moore; brothers, Jim (Hattie) Connor and John (Jearldean) Connor.

The family gives heartfelt thanks to Heartlite Hospice and to their neighbor, Connie Arnold, for the care and support they provided over the course of the past 18 months.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, from the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Dr. Glen Cummings and Stuart Kenney officiating.

Interment will follow at the Georgia National Cemetery at a later date.

Donations can be made to woundedwarriorproject.org in memory of Mrs. Kenney.

Bernhardt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
