Mr. Gordon Greenway, formerly of Tucker, entered eternal rest Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020, at the age of 96 years and 11 months, in Ellijay, while a resident of Parkside Nursing Center.

He was known as ‘The Woodworker” and as “The Mayor of Britt Rd.”

In December 1923, he was born in Chamblee, the firstborn child of Hollis L. “Bud” and Stella Brand Greenway. Later the family moved to Opa-Locka, Fla., where he worked alongside his father on a dairy farm.

At the outbreak of World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy and served stateside, and overseas aboard the U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship. Upon an honorable discharge and a return to Georgia, he entered woodworking school at Stone Mountain through the Veterans Administration and woodworking became his career choice and lifelong hobby.

He was known throughout the metro-Atlanta area for his woodworking talent, finishing and repair skills.

In 1957, he married Carolyn Joyce Bannister, of Chamblee and they made their home in Tucker. Sinus issues prompted a move to Hollywood, Fla., for the salt air. While there, he made his profession of faith and accepted the Lord. Upon returning to Tucker, he worked for a number of cabinet and furniture repair shops. His dream of a wood shop behind his house was fulfilled and he worked there well into and after retirement until his mobility declined.

He was a member of Briarlake Baptist Church, where he and Joyce enjoyed caring for the preschool children in Sunday school. He loved music, dancing, helping Cub and Boy Scouts, entertaining family and friends at home. He enjoyed feeding and watching birds and squirrels in his back yard. He was a member of VFW Post 5290, and American Legion Post 0233. He always enjoyed a laugh and never met a stranger.

He is preceded in death by parents and sisters, Carolyn Bennett, Martha Watson; wife, Joyce; son, David R.; daughter-in-law, Noami H.

He is survived by son, Alfred G. G. Jr., and wife, Rena B., both of Morganton; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020, at Bill Head Funeral Home in Tucker. Visitation is from 12-2 p.m., followed by the service at 2 p.m. and graveside at Floral Hills Cemetery in  Tucker.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Disabled Veterans or Wounded Warriors Project.
