Mrs. Kathleen Lorick Shealy Are
Mrs. Kathleen Lorick Shealy Are, of Blue Ridge, formerly of Marietta and Ellijay, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017.
Mrs. Are, a child of the late Kline and Nannie Shealy of Batesburg, S.C., was born July 18, 1931, in Batesburg, S.C. and graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School and Winthrop College. As a lifelong educator, she taught high school music and private music students. After organizing the kindergarten at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Marietta, she served as its first director, as well as teaching classes for a number of years. She was active in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and served as president at Blackwell Elementary School, and co-president at Sprayberry High School in Marietta, in addition to volunteering as Glee Club Director at Blackwell School, and in adult leadership positions for both the Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations.
She supported the athletic activities of her children, both as a school booster club member, and in a primary leadership role in the Cobb County Youth Soccer Association.
She loved music, was an avid reader, enjoyed camping and needlecrafts and loved her Hope Lutheran Church family, where she was a founding member. She loved her mountain home.
She is survived by husband of 65 years, Ward W. “Bill” Are Jr.; children, Ward W. “Skip” Are III (Robin), of Powder Springs, Patrice Kathleen Are Grizzle, of Adairsville, and David C. Are (Melony), of Grover, S.C.; grandchildren Georgia Kathleen Johnson (Brian), Timothy Grizzle (Beth), Stephanie Flatt (Brandon), Carrie Christensen (Clayton), Danielle Are, and Clayton Are; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother, Ellis Shealy (Elaine), of Batesburg-Leesville, S.C.
She is preceded in death by parents, Kline and Nannie Shealy, of Batesburg, S.C.; brothers, Leon Shealy (Louise), of Cleveland, Tenn., and Haskell Shealy (Pauline), of Taylorsville, N.C., and son-in-law, Tony Grizzle, of Adairsville.
The family will receive friends at Hope Lutheran Church, Ellijay, Monday, Nov. 20 from 4-6 p.m.
Memorial services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church the following day at 11 a.m.
Burial will be in Batesburg-Leesville, S.C., at a later date.
