John David ‘J.D.’ Kirkland
Mr. John David “J.D.” Kirkland, 77, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, at Sonshine Manor Personal Care Home in Ellijay, after an extended illness.
He was born in Ellijay, the second of eight children, to Dorothy Corn Kirkland and the late John Kirkland. He was married to the late JoAnn Kirkland of South Miami, Fla.
He retired from Florida Rock where he worked as a drag line operator for 39 years. He was of the Christian faith and trusted the Lord.
He was known for his enthusiastic, positive attitude and he never met a stranger. J.D. loved to laugh and always had a smile on his face and joy in his heart. He loved his family and friends and loved all people without reservation. He enjoyed helping others, fishing, carpentry and gardening.
He is preceded in death by sister, Glenda K. Bridges; and brother-in-law, Stephen Salle’.
He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Brenda Kirkland, of Ellijay; brother, Jim Kirkland, of San Francisco, Calif; sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Bill Parks, of Ellijay, Ginger Salle’, of Canton, Nanette and Ronald Knight, of Ellijay, Beverly and Tommy Prince, of Ellijay, and Trish Kirkland, of Duluth; grandchildren, Crystal Perez, Larry Joe Kirkland and Matt Kirkland; great-grandchildren, Alex Perez, Madison Perez, Tyler Kirkland, Aiden Kirkland, Macie Kirkland and Millie Kirkland; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, at the chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with the Rev. Junior Maney officiating.
Pallbearers were were P.W. Boatright, Tommy Prince, Derek Mackey, Matthew Kirkland, Alex Perez and Mike Bridges.
Interment was in the Yukon Cemetery.
Bernhardt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
