Ham Radio Field Day this weekend; public invited
Field Day weekend for amateur radio operators across the United States and the world, and members of the Ellijay Amateur Radio Society will be on the air Saturday from 2 p.m. until Sunday at 2 p.m.
Field Day Coordinator Roger Beauchamp said the club will set up their radios at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds, and the public is invited to visit Saturday afternoon after 2 p.m. and see what ham radio is about.
“Visitors will get to see licensed ham radio operators in action,” Beauchamp said.
Field Day is the premier event sponsored by the American Radio Relay League. It is set aside for ham radio operators, using conventional radios, Morse code and digital systems, to make as many contacts as possible across the U.S. and elsewhere, during the entire event.
While some clubs operate Field Day as a contest, others use the event as an opportunity to practice their emergency response capabilities and to demonstrate to the organizations they might serve in emergencies the use of and need for amateur radio.
The Ellijay Amateur Radio Society meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m., at United Community Bank’s Community Room in Ellijay. Any licensed HAM radio operator is invited to attend, as well as anyone interested in learning about amateur radio or becoming a licensed operator.
