19,000 registered to vote in Gilmer

One of the busiest places in the county, aside from the Georgia Apple Festival activities, has been the county registrar’s office.

“We have nearly 19,000 registered to vote. That’s a lot.” Registrar Nelda Spires said last Tuesday.

“We’re expecting a huge turnout if everyone who has registered to vote comes out,” she added.

Spires said her office had received many phone calls from people wanting to make sure they’re registered and a lot of absentee ballots had been sent out.

Last Tuesday, the office processed 122 registrations sent online over the three-day weekend. The office was closed last Monday for Columbus Day.

Tuesday also was the final day to register for the Nov. 8 General Election.

Spires said interest in the presidential race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton has spurred the increased registration.

There are local offices being contested in the General Election, so just one vote for each candidate will make it official since there are no opponents, said Tammy Watkins of the registrar’s office.

Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 17, and ends Friday, Nov. 4.

Early voting takes place at the registrar’s office at 1 Broad St., Suite 107, next to the main entrance of the courthouse. Early voting is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekday, and Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early voting ends on the Friday before the election.
