Ellijay poet to be featured reader at Writer’s Night
Ellijay poet Lynn Alexander will be a featured reader at a free, open to the public event taking place at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the Union County Community Center in Blairsville.
Alexander, a former editor of Poetry Atlanta and Atlanta Review, is the author of two poetry chapbooks (small paperbacks), Hanging Clothes at Midnight and Man Done Gone (published June 2014 by Finishing Line Press). She is currently working on The Throwaway, a memoir of secrets, betrayals and survival.
Local audiences will also have the chance to hear Ginger Murchison read at the Writers’ Night Out.
The Writer’s Almanac, which reaches nearly 800,000 listeners a day on public radio, has featured three of Murchison’s poems since April. All were read by the program’s host, Garrison Keillor.
Murchison earned an MFA from Warren Wilson College. Together with poet Thomas Lux, she helped found the Poetry at Tech showcase in Atlanta, where she served as associate director five years.
Murchison serves as a member of the board of trustees of the Frost Place, a consulting faculty for the Palm Beach Poetry Festival, and as editor-in-chief of the acclaimed Cortland Review. Her debut collection of poems, A Scrap of Linen, a Bone, was published by Press 53 earlier this year. She currently lives in Florida with her husband, Clyde Mynatt.
Writers’ Night Out, sponsored by the North Carolina Writers’ Network-West, takes place the second Friday of each month.
An open mic session will follow the two featured readers for those who would like to share their own work. Prose writers or poets wishing to participate can sign up at the door to read for three minutes.
