Winners in 11 divisions crowned at Apple Queen Pageant

Hannah McSwain described being crowned the 2016 Miss Apple Queen Saturday, Sept. 24, as an “unbelievable” experience.

The 17-year-old is home schooled and enjoys ballet, jazz, helping out with search and rescue missions, serving as part of Civil Air Patrol and volunteering at the food pantry. She is the daughter of Gary McSwain and stressed the importance of leadership and character during the on-stage question portion of the competition.

Her hope is to “be a good representative of Ellijay and Gilmer County” during her reign and to “help the community in any way” she can

The Ellijay Lions Club and Gilmer High School Leo Club sponsored the 29th annual Ellijay Apple Queen Pageant, which took place in the Ellijay Elementary School auditorium and featured 57 young women.

“It’s about more than them winning. Just walking out on stage is an achievement,” observed master of ceremonies Sabrina Pinion, Mrs. Universe 2014.

Judge Anita Sharma, who holds the title 2016 Mrs. India USA Universe, went on to encourage participants to “enjoy the experience and show your personality ... Do not give up on your dream. If you want to do something, go for it.”

Other judges included Nova Kopp, Ms. International 2017; Caroline Marie Wade, 2016 Ms. Hemisphere; and Gigy Gonzalez, Mrs. Universe Puerto Rico. The pageant director was Stephanie Nelson and Gabrielle Cornett was the event pianist.
