Official: ER to open Feb. 1

Eleven months after the emergency room closed at North Georgia Medical Center, it is expected to reopen. Piedmont Mountainside Hospital representatives in Jasper have released a statement announcing they will reopen the ER in three weeks.

“We are excited to announce that the Piedmont Emergency Department will open by Feb. 1,” said Denise Ray, chief executive officer of Piedmont Mountainside.

She said construction on the emergency department at 1362 S. Main St., which was expected to open in mid-January, is “close to complete.”

“Medical equipment, such as a 64 Slice-CT scanner, X-ray, pharmacy and laboratory are being delivered and upgraded,” Ray said.

“Upon the facility’s opening, patients requiring admission or transfer will follow the same process as they would with Piedmont Mountainside and will be treated with the same level of quality, safety and service.”

North Georgia Medical closed its emergency room March 1, and the hospital as an operational facility shut down June 6. Gilmer Nursing Home, which adjoins the hospital, has remained open.

“This (ER) facility allows Piedmont Mountainside Hospital to expand our patient-centered services to Ellijay,” Ray added.

Piedmont will lease the emergency department from SunLink Health Systems, the parent company of NGMC and the nursing home. Max Davis, a senior communications specialist with Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta, said $2.2 million was put into the ER department remodeling.
