Man pleads on manslaughter charge
An Ellijay man charged in the death of a Whitepath resident in September pleaded not guilty in Gilmer County Superior Court last week.
Samuel Paul Butts, 37, of Sanford Drive, is charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the death of David Thurman, 54. He also faces counts of reckless conduct, battery and being a recidivist, according to court documents.
Butts made his plea Jan. 31 before Judge Mary Elizabeth Priest.
Thurman was found unresponsive by emergency personnel at Maxwell Road off Highway 515 North on Sept. 18. There were conflicting stories on the circumstances surrounding Thurman’s death, but witnesses said they saw Butts and Thurman fighting on that Sunday morning.
Butts was charged in December by sheriff’s office investigators and remains in the county jail, according to a spokeswoman.
