Man charged with child sex crimes
A Gilmer County man was arrested Jan. 20 for sex crimes against a child that he also had photos of on the alleged victim’s cellphone, authorities said.
Charles Lamar Arp, 61, of 117 Evergreen Trail, was charged with felony child molestation/aggravated child molestation by the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office after an investigation of incidents between late December and mid-January.
Deputy Michael Shepard responded to a call on Jan. 13 where a mother said her daughter told her Arp had been “touching her panties,” according to an incident report. The daughter further told her mother Arp “sits her in his lap and pulls her pants out and sticks his hands inside.”
When the mother confronted Arp about what the daughter told her, he said it was “a lie and changed the subject ... she asked him again and he walked off and began smoking a cigarette,” the report states.
Shepard said the mother reported she checked her daughter’s cellphone “to make sure that her daughter had not seen anything inappropriate that could’ve put this idea in her head.”
“She checked the phone’s history and only found cartoons and other materials she had approved,” Shepard wrote. “(The mother) then looked through the photos and found a picture of (the daughter) and Charles Arp, and she stated the next picture was of (Arp’s) hands inside (the daughter’s) panties.” The mother showed Shepard the photos that had a time stamp of Dec. 28.
Arp remains in the Gilmer County jail and has a $25,000 bond, according to a spokeswoman.
