Icy road claims life

A Dalton man died late Saturday afternoon when his car slid off an ice-covered road in western Gilmer County, authorities said.

Arginiro Granados, 55, of Mountain View Drive, was found off the side of Highway 282 in his 2004 Chevrolet Venture minivan by an off-duty Murray County EMT, said Gilmer Coroner Jerry Hensley.

“(Granados’) son said he thought he was coming to church over here somewhere,” Hensley said. “It was about 2 miles into Gilmer County (from Murray County). It was near the entrance to Woodbridge Estates. He came across the hill and hit the ice and went off the road into a big hole.”

Granados struck a utility pole after he left the roadway and overturned, according to a Georgia State Patrol crash report. A 33-year-old male passenger suffered a “nonfatal injury” and was taken from the scene by Gilmer EMS to Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton, the report states.

Hensley pronounced Granados dead at the scene at 6:12 p.m., but he said the EMT told Gilmer 911 Dispatch when he found him he had already passed. Hensley said it appeared the wreck occurred between 5 and 5:15 p.m.

“The road was solid ice,” he added. “When I stopped and started to walk up there to it, I couldn’t hardly stand.”

A sheriff’s office spokeswoman said 282 was partially shut down to traffic from 5:30 p.m. to almost 2 a.m. after the wreck.
