Help Stuff the Bus during sales tax holiday
As students prepare to return to school for the 2016-2017 academic year, the Georgia Department of Revenue has announced a sales tax holiday will be held Saturday, July 30, and Sunday, July 31.
General school and art supplies, such as binders, calculators, crayons, glue, highlighters and notebooks, with an individual price of $20 or less per item are exempt from state sales tax under the holiday regulations.
Clothing and footwear items with a sales price of $100 or less per item also are exempt. Accessories, such as jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, eyewear, watches and watchbands, are not included in the list of exemptions.
Single purchases of $1,000 or less of personal computers and computer-related accessories also will not be subject to sales tax for the two-day period.
Help Stuff the Bus
The Gilmer County Optimist Club is encouraging area residents to purchase supplies on the sales tax holiday for the nonprofit’s Stuff the Bus initiative.
The group’s fourth annual school supply drive goes to support local students by providing classroom items for families who cannot afford them throughout the school year.
Requested items for the collection drive include backpacks, markers, crayons, pens, poster boards, glue, cleaning wipes, tissues, hand sanitizer and any other type of school or art supply.
Monetary donations will also be accepted and collected funds will be used to purchase additional items.
A school bus will be parked in front of the East Ellijay Walmart Friday, July 29, and Saturday, July 30. Shoppers can drop off donated supplies on site.
Items can also be dropped off throughout the month of July at the following locations in the community: American Legion Post 82, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers, Bealls Outlet, Century 21, Charlie’s Italian Restaurant, Chick-fil-A, Coldwell Banker, Community and Southern Bank, Dairy Queen, Gilmer County Courthouse, Gilmer County Chamber, Huff’s Drug Store, IHOP, Regions Bank, Ronnie Thompson Ford, RE/MAX Town and Country, Times-Courier and The UPS Store.
