Florida man faces local rape charge
A Florida man was charged with rape after an incident in the Gunstock Creek community Feb. 1, authorities said.
Joseph Lee Hulsey, 37, of 6337 Woodman Drive in Jacksonville, was charged Feb. 3 by the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office with the “strong-arm” rape of a 24-year-old woman, according to an incident report.
Hulsey was staying at a residence where the alleged victim’s cousin lives, and she was left alone with Hulsey when the cousin’s mother left. The woman told Officer Robert Stanfield when she went into a children’s bedroom to change out of her pajamas, Hulsey followed her into the bedroom and would not leave.
Stanfield reported seeing a bruise on the alleged victim’s right arm and an abrasion on the right side of her face, along with another injury.
When the cousin’s mother returned, she heard the woman screaming from inside a closet. Upon opening the bedroom door, the mother said Hulsey slammed it in her face. She then kicked the door open, found Hulsey hiding behind the door and ordered him to leave. Hulsey gathered his belongings and left on foot, according to the report.
Hulsey is being held at the county jail with no bond, according to a spokeswoman.
