A Memorial Day tradition, rain or shine

Rain early Tuesday morning did not stop members of Ellijay’s American Legion Post 82, the post 82 auxiliary, the Legion Riders motorcycle group and other volunteers from putting out more than 800 white wooden crosses bearing the names of military veterans who either hailed from Gilmer County and died while serving their country or passed away here after their time of service. Above, American Legion member and Vietnam veteran Doug Lane, left, hammers in a line of the crosses along South Main Street, while auxiliary members Judy Lynn and Barb Wiley affix American flags to the markers, which are displayed each year in observance of Memorial Day.
