Man indicted in DUI-related death
A Gilmer County man has been indicted in the DUI-related death of a passenger who was riding with him when he wrecked in November, according to a Gilmer County Superior Court criminal case index.
John Thomas Green, 47, of 957 Ridgeway Church Road, was indicted by an April grand jury in the vehicular death of Leon Keith Lonas, 46, that occurred on the evening of Nov. 26. Lonas was a passenger in the 2014 Jeep Wrangler Green was driving that went off the road just east of the Gilmer-Fannin line on Highway 282.
The Jeep went down an embankment, struck a culvert, overturned and struck a tree on Lonas’ side of the vehicle, according to a Georgia State Patrol crash report. Both men had to be extricated with the jaws of life.
Green faces three counts of first-degree vehicular homicide, two counts of DUI (per se and less safe), reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and driving too fast for conditions.
The Clerk of Court’s office will be sending out arraignment notices for a court appearance date after they have given case numbers to the district attorney’s office, according to a DA’s office spokeswoman.
