Four arrested for drugs and trafficking

Four Gilmer County residents were arrested Friday for illegal drugs, using cell- phones to commit crimes and violating the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, authorities said.

Rusty Edward Marshall, 36, of 113 Burgess Circle, is charged by the Zell Miller Mountain parkway Drug Task Force with attempt or conspiracy to violate the Georgia Controlled Substance Act (VGCSA) and use of a communication facility in commission of a felony involving a controlled substance.

Crystal Rebecca Norton, 33, of 236 Forestry Hills Drive, is charged by the task force with attempt or conspiracy to commit an offense under this article, possession of a firearm or knife while trying to commit crimes, prohibited activities, trafficking in cocaine, illegal drugs or marijuana and use of a communication facility in committing an act or felony.

Benji Harold Sanford, 35, of 59 Savannah Lane, is charged by the task force with attempt or conspiracy to commit an offense under this article, prohibited activities under RICO and use of a communication facility in committing an act or felony.

Russell Reagan Scoggins, 47, of 664 River Hill Road, is charged by the task force with attempt or conspiracy to commit an offense under this article, prohibited activities under RICO and use of a communication facility in committing an act of felony.

Agents of the task force, along with deputies from Gilmer and Pickens counties, executed a search warrant at the residence of Crystal Norton off Forestry Drive in Ellijay at approximately 5:36 a.m. on Aug. 18, according to a Gilmer sheriff’s office release. During the execution of the search warrant, approximately 40 grams of methamphetamine and 33 Xanax pills were seized.

Later that day, a consent search was conducted at the residence of Russ Scoggins off River Hill Road. During this search, approximately 5 grams of marijuana were seized.

“These searches were pursuant to a several months long investigation by the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway Drug Task Force into methamphetamine and prescription pills distribution,” Sheriff Stacy Nicholson stated in the release.

All four suspects were still in the county jail Tuesday, according to a spokeswoman.
