Deal brings classic country songs, stories back to playhouse

Join Katie Deal and her trio of musicians for a celebration of real deal country music — the type that grew out of dusty dirt roads and red clay roots — when Deal returns to the George Link Jr. Gilmer Arts Playhouse Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m.

This nostalgic concert will feature classic country hits, pop country, gospel and new traditional tunes. Katie performs her own original tunes, as well as songs written by hit Nashville songwriters.

The fourth child and third daughter of Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal and first lady Sandra Deal,  the singer-songwriter grew up in the foothills of the north Georgia mountains and was raised on country classics. She jokingly refers to herself as the “third first daughter.”

Since leaving home for her first professional gig in Memphis, Tenn., Deal has wowed audiences nationally and internationally, most notably for her portrayal of Patsy Cline in two national tours of the musical production A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline

Deal regularly performs in touring concerts honoring the greats including I Got a Right to Sing the Blues: A salute to Ella, Judy and Patsy, Today, Tomorrow & Forever: A Tribute to Patsy Cline, Classic Nashville Roadshow with Jason Petty and Wildflowers: The Women of Country Music. She frequently performs as a guest vocalist with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra and can be seen in a coffee shop playing an original acoustic set or in theatrical productions across the country.

As for reviews, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says, “Deal shines when she sings.” According to the Memphis Flyer, “When Deal lets loose ... jaws unhinge.”

Last year at the playhouse, Deal presented her tribute to the women of country music. This time, it’s a whole new show with the same passion and love of the stories behind the classic country songs we all love.
