Authorities: Gilmer man commits murder, suicide in Florida

A 73-year-old north Georgia man drove all the way to Brevard County to kill his former stepdaughter and then shot himself in St. Johns County in a murder-suicide, according to the Brevard (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators determined Edward Douglas Ratcliffe, of Gilmer County, blamed 54-year-old Amy Mitchell for his divorce and shot her multiple times Thursday morning at her home in Cocoa.

The St. Johns Sheriff’s Office later contacted Brevard authorities that Ratcliffe ended up there and called 911, saying he killed his stepdaughter and was going to commit suicide.

Deputies responded to the area and located Ratcliffe, who shot himself as they approached, according to the Brevard Sheriff’s Office.
