Woman dies in house fire

by Mark Millican

An elderly Gilmer County woman died in a house fire Monday near a county fire station that has been closed due to budget cuts, authorities said.

Mary Nell Findley, 79, of 103 Orchard Lane off Yukon Road, was found after firefighters were able to douse the fire and work their way through the debris. Fire Chief Tony Pritchett said Findley’s son was on the scene when they arrived and gave information that his mother could possibly be in the home.

“Right now the cause would be an electrical fire,” Pritchett said. “The home was totally destroyed.”

He added that “a lot of folks” were asking how the home burned being essentially right across the road from the fire station.

“The commissioners closed it, (but) it was manned full-time until the budget cuts,” said Pritchett. “It’s one of the ones we’ve talked about opening again, along with the (Highway) 382 station out there.”

He said the call about the fire came in at 4:21 a.m. on Nov. 25.
