Whitepath Golf Course to change management
by Ryan Rees
The Gilmer County Board of Commissioners has elected to take over operation of Whitepath Golf Course on an interim basis after the current lessee, Marc Reece, opted out of his lease because he said he could not afford a 10 percent increase to the $90,000 annual lease payment.
Reece terminated his lease effective July 31.
The county will pa
y Reece Golf, Inc. $78,400 for various pieces of maintenance equipment and furnishings in the pro shop, which will be paid out of contingency funds, according to Chairman JC Sanford.
James “Slugger” Strawbridge will take over daily operation of the golf course, taking a leave of absence from his position with the county sheriff’s department.
Sanford said the course will be open for business Aug. 1.
County Attorney David Clark said a new lessee might be in place by the first of next year as the county plans to put out bid requests for a new lessee in the coming weeks.
