Karleen Ferguson, longtime Ellijay resident and previous post 2 commissioner (from 2019-22), has qualified for candidacy as post 1 commissioner in the 2024 election season.
“For over 30 years, the goodness of the people and the beauty of the region have fueled my love of Gilmer County and have compelled me not only to stay, but to stay involved,” Ferguson said.
Ferguson credits her knowledge of local history, personal involvement in the community and her proven commitment to the citizens of Gilmer to be the foundation of her candidacy.
“My past experiences and present perspectives are relevant to both the businesses and residents of Gilmer County,” she said. “I am proud to have served the community in a variety of roles — from Gilmer Chamber staff member to local business owner, from civic volunteer to active involvement in strategic community planning.”
Ferguson stated that she has three primary areas of focus: addressing the need for affordable housing, protecting Gilmer’s natural resources and agricultural heritage and working with parks and rec. to establish a recreational facility for all ages.
“On behalf of the people of Gilmer County, I welcome the opportunity to work with the other commissioners in a way that honors the area’s history and steadfast values,” she said. “I understand that growth is inevitable and believe we can work together to ensure it is measured and planned for in ways that will benefit the community.”
