First Families Program

Local residents are invited to research their family history and join the First Families of Gilmer County program. We are nearing 100 members who have been approved since turning in their applications. There are volunteers in the Gilmer County Library research room each Friday to help you with your records search.
The purpose of the First Families Program is to honor the pioneers who were settled in Gilmer County by 1840 or before and to recognize those descendants who became members of the First Families Program.
This program is under the leadership of Betty Riddle, of Jasper, and her co-workers. According to Riddle, those applicants who were accepted and approved before the last day of Dec. 2012 are considered charter members.
The First Families Program encourages those to apply who are directly descended from the early citizens listed on the 1840 Gilmer County Census.  Applicants are not required to be currently residing in Gilmer County. Those who apply should have proof without doubt to ties of an ancestor listed in the 1840 Gilmer County Georgia Census.
Primary proof must be documentation that verifies lineage, generation to generation. Examples include birth, death and marriage certificates, deeds and/or Bible records. Secondary proof or supporting proof will be census records. Tombstone photos are acceptable to verify birth and death dates.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept county histories and similar hearsay documents as proof without the primary or secondary information.
Application forms are in the research room at the Gilmer County Library. To obtain a copy of the application you may also access the Gilmer Genealogical Society at www.gcgsi.org.  The site has helpful materials for your searches of Gilmer County census records, marriage records and more.
